The English major is very a rewarding major in college.  There are so many doors that can open for those who choose the English major and earn a degree.  The English major offers a variety of career choices.  For example, there are many who major in English, earn the degree, and become professors, high school teachers, editors, publishers, professional writers, novelists, journalists, etc.  In fact, many lawyers actually majored in English for their Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degrees.  The English major also teaches people how to become more analytical and articulate writers and readers.  This article will provide information that will help college students decide if the English major is right for them.  This article will also teach students how to major in English.

irst consider your likes and dislikes as a college student and as a person.  The English major requires a lot of reading and a lot of writing.  When you are working on your Bachelor’s degree, the average literature class will require that students read at least four novels and write about three to four essays.  The average English major will take three to four classes per semester for about two years in order to earn the bachelor’s degree.  The Master’s degree will ask students to read about six to eight novels per class.  So, if you love to read, then defiantly the major is for you.
If you choose to major in English, you will have to complete all of your general education first, and complete the prerequisites.  In the United States, the average university requires that students take at least one survey of American literature course and at least one survey of British literature course, sometimes two of each.  After, you will be required to take a series literature and composition courses.  For the most part, the composition courses are prerequisites.   The literature courses will range in a variety of different literatures.  Your university will offer various choices of specialty literature courses.  These are great because you can choose your interests from genre to certain authors.

The English major will also help you find your voice as a writer, and it will put you in touch with some of the most amazing pieces of literature.  There will be much research required through your university library.  The research will be based on the literature you read.  For the most part, all of your essays will be argumentative, in which you will examine several aspects in the literature you read and shed light on those aspects.  You will also learn how to apply the literature that you read to your own life, which will help you articulate life and human nature more clearly.
